In a special proclamation, Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan declared September 2, 2024, Labor Day, as Charles Spencer Day in the city to honor his remarkable career, lifelong dedication to civil rights, and his scholarship contributions to over 1,000 students in the past three decades.
“That’s the kind of man Charles is – a tireless advocate of equal opportunity for all, whether it’s on the docks or in the classroom,” Mayor Donna Deegan said at the JAXPORT Board of Directors Meeting. “JAXPORT and our city are stronger, fairer, and more equitable because of his work.”
Recently, he also received the 2024 Benjamin L. Hooks “Keeper of the Flame” Award from the NAACP, recognizing his unwavering commitment to racial equality and workplace fairness.
