Become a part of the largest union of Maritime Workers in North America.
Help keep America’s economy moving.
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) offers dynamic and rewarding career opportunities in the maritime and transportation industries, requiring commitment and resilience as we work around the clock in all types of weather conditions. This job is far from the typical 9 to 5, and while we embrace the challenges it presents, it’s important to acknowledge that it’s not for everyone. As one of the oldest and largest labor unions in North America, the ILA represents workers engaged in a diverse range of tasks related to the loading, unloading, and transportation of goods through ports, terminals, and warehouses.
Career Paths (Crafts) in the ILA
Deepsea
Longshore workers, also known as dock workers, are essential members of the ILA workforce. They handle the loading and unloading of cargo from ships, operating heavy machinery such as cranes, forklifts, and pallet jacks to move containers and materials efficiently. This physically demanding job requires workers to have strong problem-solving skills, the ability to work under pressure, and experience with port safety protocols.
Warehouse/M&R (Maintenance & Repair)
Warehouse workers in ILA are responsible for the storage, handling, and distribution of cargo once it arrives at the port or terminal. They may perform tasks such as organizing shipments, inspecting goods, and ensuring that inventories are properly maintained. This role often requires knowledge of inventory management systems and safety regulations.
Clerks and Checkers
The ILA also provides opportunities for clerical and office staff who handle administrative tasks related to operations, such as scheduling, documentation, timekeeping and customer service. These roles are vital in ensuring smooth logistics, maintaining records, and supporting the operational and financial aspects of the association and its members.
Other Skilled Crafts
In addition to our core operations, ILA employs a diverse array of crafts that ensure the smooth functioning of port activities. Our skilled boatmen play a vital role, expertly tying and untying ships as they arrive and depart, facilitating safe and efficient navigation in bustling waterways. Meanwhile, our dedicated port and general maintenance teams work diligently to uphold the integrity of our facilities, ensuring that equipment and infrastructure are in optimal condition for the demands of maritime commerce. The cotton compress operation is another critical facet, where our personnel manage the pressing and baling of cotton, optimizing space and ensuring quality for transport. Additionally, our tank cleaners maintain the highest standards of safety and cleanliness by ensuring that storage tanks are properly cleaned and maintained, preventing contamination and facilitating smooth operations. Together, these crafts contribute to the overall efficiency and safety of our port, showcasing ILA’s commitment to excellence in every aspect of maritime logistics.
We are the heartbeat of our nation’s supply chain.
We keep freight moving.
During the pandemic, longshoremen and longshorewomen worked tirelessly, rain or shine, and around the clock to keep up with the extra freight coming into America.
