Since 1995 under the leadership of our founding chairman, Charles F. Spencer, the ILA Local 1408 Scholarship Fund, Port of Jax., Inc. has awarded over one million dollars in scholarships to more than 1000 qualified recipients (forty percent of these recipients are first-generation college students).
The application process begins in February and ends in May. Applicants are required to be graduating seniors or returning college students that have not earned a Bachelor’s degree. Students must maintain a 3.0 or better GPA, have completed a minimum of 50 community service volunteer hours and write a 2+ page essay in APA format on a question involving the Maritime industry.
The fund’s primary fundraiser is an annual golf tournament that attracts golf enthusiasts, individual and corporate business sponsors, like the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District (SAGCD) of the ILA.
This year’s 27th Annual ILA Local 1408 Scholarship Award Ceremony will be held August 8, 2022 at 10:30 AM on the campus of Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida. We are extremely proud to award 21 students with more than $46,000, Of this amount (2) students will receive $5,000 and(4) will receive $3,000 individual scholarships. The funds’ largest awards to date.
