ILA Mourns The Passing of John Tyler, A Member of Local 24, Houston, Texas

Today, the International Longshoremen’s Association, AFL-CIO mourns the tragic death of John Tyler, 40, a member of ILA Local 24 in Houston, Texas. Brother Tyler was killed on Friday at 4:13 am as he was working the container ship, Maersk Detroit at Houston’s Bayport Terminal.

An ILA veteran of 10 years, Brother Tyler was a driving a truck when the container he was hauling was lifted by a crane with his truck still attached. Reports are that the truck crashed back to the ground from approximately 40 feet in the air.

ILASafety Director Bob Fiore and ILA Safety Representative Charles Montgomery are investigating the accident.

The ILA has arranged for grief counselors to work with Houston ILA members this weekend.

“The collective prayers of tens of thousands of ILA members from around the country are extended to Brother John Tyler’s family as we all come to grips with this tragic accidental death,” said International President Harold J. Daggett. “While we mourn Brother Tyler’s death, we must look for answers on how to prevent accidents like this one. We cannot keep losing our ILA members to senseless and preventable accidents.”

Brother Tyler leaves behind a loving wife and family.

His Union brothers and sisters are also left with an emptiness in their hearts knowing that we lost a great friend and colleague.

ILA Local 24 has setup a GoFundMe page for the Tyler family.  All proceeds will go to help the family.
